Employee Performance Management Full-Day Seminar July 17

The Oregon Chapter will sponsor a day-long seminar on employee performance management on Wednesday, July 17. The program will run from 7:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. at the Tualatin Police Department, 8650 SW Tualatin Road, Tualatin. The cost for members is $79 (non-members pay $99), which includes breakfast and lunch.

The morning presentation (8-11:30 a.m.) will be:

Conducting Effective Investigations – It is easy for an employer to violate the law while conducting an internal investigation, even if the employer has the best of intentions. Join Tamara E. Jones from CityCounty Insurance Services and learn about key legal issues associated with internal investigations, the areas of employment law that shape when and how organizations should conduct internal investigations.  Tamara will also advise on some best practices for conducting internal investigations, will discuss common mistakes and pitfalls that every employer should avoid, and will discuss cases where employers poorly handled investigations had significant legal consequences. This presentation will include opportunities for Q&A.

Tamara Jones has practiced employment law on behalf of employers and management for 16 years, is a frequent presenter on legal issues in the human resources field, and served as editor of the book “Model Policies and Forms for Oregon Employers”, published in association with the Associated Oregon Industries (2007-2012 editions)

The afternoon session (1-4:30 p.m.) will be:

Effective Discipline & Discharge – This program provides attendees with the most effective and appropriate investigation and evaluation tips.  There are many opportunities to role play with hands-on examples of problem interviews, he-said/she-said cases.  Case studies allow attendees to wrestle with the burdens of proof and reach the correct disciplinary decision that will not get overturned by a labor arbitrator.

Todd A. Lyon has been a labor lawyer for over 15 years, representing public and private sector employers in labor organizing, negotiations, arbitrations, and employment litigation. He regularly assists clients with the interpretation of collective bargaining agreements and disciplinary matters so as to avoid grievances. However, if the grievance is advanced to arbitration, Todd has conducted hundreds of arbitration hearings with superior results concerning virtually every aspect of contract interpretation and discipline.
